Project Information & Construction Status
CONTRACT / PROJECT COMPLETION DATE: AUGUST 2018
ROUTE 31 PROJECT STATUS (UPDATED 12/29/2017)
The contractor has completed 2017 construction operations including all base and intermediate course Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) paving for the entire project length. Also, all proposed drainage improvements have been installed. Some of the new drainage structures will remain covered through the winter awaiting completion of the remaining road, curbing, sidewalks and other edge of road work.
Work on this project will start back up in the Spring of 2018 and will include but is not limited to, completing the drainage work, edge of road curbing, guardrails, comprehensive traffic signage improvement program, road edge work, cleanup and blending with adjoining properties, completing the new sidewalk from Bemis Street to Asterwood, and final top course paving.
Please drive safely and adhere to Speed Limits, 40 MPH rurally from the Charlton Town Line and changing to 30 MPH north of Vista Lane, at all times.
Please keep in mind that this is a one year project and it is scheduled for completion in August 2018.
If you have any questions, comments or concerns about any aspect of the project, your driveway or your frontage please let this office know so that we can advise the contractor and have it addressed in 2018.
Everything will be completed functionally and cosmetically by the end of the project schedule, next August 2018 or sooner. We will do our best to make sure of that. Your assistance in bringing any comments, concerns, observations, etc. to our attention as soon as possible is important to the successful completion of the project for all users and abutters.
Next Steps - Additional Information
Refer to above for next steps in 2017 and 2018, respectively. Project limits are Route 31 (Maple St / Charlton Rd) from Bemis Street to the Charlton Town line (3.7 miles). The total estimated cost for this project is $4,874,060.00. All work under this project will be accomplished within the existing Town owned right-of-way (ROW).
This is a MassDOT administered project. We will do our best to post relevant notices and key activities ongoing or upcoming on this web page.
The project includes the following improvements:
- Reclaiming Route 31 from the Charlton Town line to Bemis St (3.7 miles) to a depth of 12 inches and putting down 7.25 inches of new Superpave in 3 lifts.
- South of Howe Road, we’re planning on 26 feet of width. North of Howe Road, we’re planning on 28 feet of width.
- Replacing all guardrails.
- Updating existing / installing proposed drainage improvements.
- Bacon Hill Road / Cranberry Meadow Road intersection safety improvements consisting of sight improvements in the northeast quadrant.
- East Charlton Road intersection safety improvements consisting of the complete realignment of the intersection to a typical "T" intersection.
